The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
I CALL TO witness the star of the pleiades when it has dipped 1 Your Companion is neither astray nor being misled. 2 He does not speak out of his own desires. 3 It is only an Inspiration that is inspired. 4 He has been taught by the Extremely Powerful. 5 Endued with Wisdom: for he appeared (in stately form); 6 appearing in the horizon's loftiest part, 7 Then he approached and came closer, 8 until he was as close to him as the distance of two bows, or even less. 9 When He revealed to His votary what He revealed. 10 The heart did not deny, what it saw. (The Holy Prophet was bestowed with seeing Allah – see also preceding verses 8, 9, 10.) 11 Are you, then, going to contend with him regarding what he sees with his eyes? 12 And verily he saw him yet another time 13 to the Lot-tree (in the seven heavens) 14 nigh which is the Garden of the Refuge, 15 When the Lote-tree was covered over with what it was covered over; 16 his eyes did not swerve, nor did they stray 17 Verily he saw one of the greater revelations of his Lord. 18 Have ye seen Lat. and 'Uzza, 19 And subsequently the third, the Manat? 20 Why - for yourselves [you would choose only] male offspring, whereas to Him [you assign] female: 21 That, then, is an unjust division. 22 They are nothing but some names that you have coined, you and your forefathers – Allah has not sent any proof for them; they follow only guesses and their own desires; whereas the guidance from their Lord has come to them. 23 Nay, shall man have (just) anything he hankers after? 24 Rather, to Allah belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. 25
