He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ HE FROWNED AND turned away, 1 Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs). 2 But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified 3 Or that he might receive admonition, and that the admonition might profit him? 4 Yet you pay attention 5 To him do you address yourself. 6 although thou art not accountable for his failure to attain to purity; 7 As for him who comes to you striving (after goodness), 8 and fearfully, 9 From him you are distracted. 10 No indeed, this is a Reminder; 11 so let those who want to follow its guidance do so. 12 In honored books, 13 Exalted, pure. 14 by the hands of the noble, virtuous, 15 Noble and righteous. 16 May (the disbelieving) human being be condemned! What makes him disbelieve? 17 From what thing did He create him? 18 He created him from a living germ. He determined his fate 19 Then made his passage easy (at birth); 20 then He caused him to die and brought him to the grave, 21 Then He will raise him up again when He please. 22 Certainly, he has not duly fulfilled His commands. 23 Let man consider his food: 24 We send down abundant water, 25 Then split the earth in clefts 26 And cause the grain to grow therein 27 And grapes and clover plants (i.e. green fodder for the cattle), 28 And the olive and the palm, 29 And garden-closes of thick foliage 30 And fruits and fodder,- 31 A provision for you and your cattle. 32 Then, when there comes As-Sakhkhah (the Day of Resurrection's second blowing of Trumpet), 33 On the Day whereon a man shall flee from his brother, 34 and his mother and his father; 35 his wife and his children. 36 Everyman, that Day, will have enough to make him careless of others. 37 Some faces will on that Day be bright with happiness, 38 and be cheerful and joyous. 39 And other faces, that Day, will be dust-stained; 40 Covered with the blackness (of shame): 41 These are they who are unbelievers, the wicked. 42
