He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ The Prophet frowned and turned away 1 Because there came to him the blind man. 2 What made you think that he will not grow in virtue, 3 Or that he might receive admonition, and the teaching might profit him? 4 As for him who thinketh himself independent, 5 to him didst thou give thy whole attention, 6 though you are not to be blamed if he would not purify himself -- 7 but as for one who comes to you, eagerly 8 And he feareth 9 From him thou art distracted. 10 By no means (should it be so)! For it is indeed a Message of instruction: 11 and so, whoever is willing may remember Him 12 It is set down on honoured pages, 13 Exalted (in dignity), kept pure and holy, 14 [Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels, 15 noble and pious. 16 Accursed is man. How ungrateful is he! 17 Of what did He create him? 18 From a single sperm He created, then proportioned him, 19 Then He eased the way for him; 20 Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him. 21 Then, when it is His Will, He will resurrect him (again). 22 By no means he performed not that which He had commanded him. 23 Then let mankind look at his food - 24 We poured out the rains abundantly, 25 Thereafter We cleave the earth in clefts, 26 And caused to grow within it grain 27 and vines, and reeds, 28 Olives and dates, 29 the densely tree'd gardens, 30 And fruits and grasses: 31 all this as a provision for you and your cattle. 32 Then when cometh the Deafening Cry 33 On the Day whereon a man shall flee from his brother, 34 his mother, his father, 35 And his wife and his children, 36 on that Day every man among them will have enough concern of his own -- 37 On that day faces will be bright as dawn, 38 laughing and joyful, 39 And other faces that Day will be dust-stained, 40 Darkness will cover them, 41 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked. 42
