The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the night enshrouding 1 By the day when it appeareth in glory, 2 and That which created the male and the female, 3 Lo! your effort is dispersed (toward divers ends). 4 Yet he who gives to others and has fear, 5 for those who spend for the cause of God, 6 We will ease him toward ease. 7 But as for him who is niggardly, and thinks that he is self-sufficient, 8 and cries lies to the reward most fair, 9 We shall surely ease for him the Path of Hardship (the Fire). 10 and his wealth shall be of no avail to him when he perishes. 11 Surely upon Us rests the guidance, 12 And to Us belong the End and the Beginning. 13 Wherefore I have warned you of Fire flaming, 14 in which none shall be roasted except the most wretched sinner, 15 Who give the lie to Truth and turn their backs. 16 But those most devoted to Allah shall be removed far from it,- 17 He who gives his wealth to be purified, 18 And no one has done a favour to him, for which he should be compensated. 19 But only seeking the Countenance of his Lord the Most High. 20 He will surely be well-pleased (with him). 21
