a multitude of the ancients, 39 And a multitude of those of later time. 40 As for the Companions of the Left 41 In hot wind and boiling water, 42 And a shade of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor honorable. 44 Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury 45 But persisted in that greater sin, 46 They used to say: “What! Once we are dead and are reduced to dust and bones, shall we still be raised to a new life from the dead? 47 "And also our forefathers?" 48 Say: "Yea, those of old and those of later times, 49 Will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day. 50 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, 51 Shall surely eat of the tree of Az-Zqqum. 52 And fill (your) bellies with it; 53 And upon it, you will drink the hot boiling water. 54 And drink as drinks the thirsty camel. 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 We have created you: why then do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you considered the seed you spill? 58 Create him ye, or are We the Creator? 59 It was We who decreed death among you. We will not be surpassed 60 That We may transfigure you and make you what ye know not. 61 And [since] you are indeed aware of the [miracle of your] coming into being in the first instance - why, then, do you not bethink yourselves [of Us]? 62 So what is your opinion regarding what you sow? 63 Is it you or We Who make them grow? 64 If We pleased, We should have certainly made it broken down into pieces, then would you begin to lament: 65 [Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt; 66 Rather, we have been prevented' 67 Consider the water that you drink. 68 Is it you who cause it to descend from the clouds, or do We? 69 We could make it brackish, if We pleased; so why do you not acknowledge thanks? 70 Have you seen the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the producer? 72 We have made it a reminder and an advantage for the wayfarers of the desert. 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
