The chiefs of Firon's people said: most surely this is an enchanter possessed of knowledge: 109 who desires to expel you from your land; what do you command?' 110 They answered: "Let him and his brother wait awhile, and send unto all cities heralds 111 to summon every skilful magician to your presence.' 112 So there came the sorcerers to Pharaoh: They said, "of course we shall have a (suitable) reward if we win!" 113 He said, "Yes, and, [moreover], you will be among those made near [to me]." 114 They said: 'Moses, will you throw first or shall we be the throwers' 115 He answered: "You throw [first]." And when they threw down [their staffs,] they cast a spell upon the people's eyes, and struck them with awe, and produced mighty sorcery. 116 Then We revealed to Moses: 'Now, throw down your staff' And thereupon it swallowed up their false invention. 117 ۞ So, the truth prevailed and what they were doing was annulled; 118 Thus they were vanquished there, and they went back abased. 119 And the sorcerers prostrated themselves 120 They said: we believe in the Lord of the worlds. 121 the Sustainer of Moses and Aaron!" 122 Pharaoh said, "You dare believe in Him before I have given you permission? Behold, this is indeed a plot which you have devised in this city in order to drive its people out. But you shall soon know the consequences, 123 "Be sure I will cut off your hands and your feet on apposite sides, and I will cause you all to die on the cross." 124 They said: "Verily, we are returning to our Lord. 125 Thou takest vengeance on us only forasmuch as we believed the tokens of our Lord when they came unto us. Our Lord! Vouchsafe unto us steadfastness and make us die as men who have surrendered (unto Thee). 126
