A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 And a crowd of the later. 40 And those of the left hand, how wretched are those of the left hand! 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 And the shade of black smoke. 43 Nothing (will there be) to refresh, nor to please: 44 Verily they have been heretofore affluent. 45 And they persisted in the great violation. 46 and would say: "What! After we have died and become mere dust and bones, shall we, forsooth, be raised from the dead? 47 (We) and our fore-fathers of yore?” 48 Say: "Indeed, the earlier and the later generations 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 Then you went astray, you that belied, 51 You will indeed eat from the Zaqqum tree. 52 "Then will ye fill your insides therewith, 53 and on top of this you will drink boiling water 54 You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink." 55 This shall be their hospitality on the Day of Doom. 56 It is He who created you, then why do you not affirm the truth? 57 Have ye seen that which ye emit? 58 did you create it or did We? 59 It is We Who ordained death upon you and We are not to be frustrated. 60 from replacing you by others like yourselves or changing your forms and re-creating you in forms that you know nothing of. 61 And assuredly ye have fully known the first production wherefore heed ye not? 62 Just ponder over what you sow: 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 We could turn it, if We pleased, into straw; then you would rue the day, 65 (Saying), "We are indeed left with debts (for nothing): 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 Have ye observed the water which ye drink? 68 Did you send it down from the clouds, or did We send it? 69 If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful? 70 Did you consider the fire which you kindle? 71 Have you raised its tree, or We have raised it? 72 It is We who have made it as a reminder and a means of comfort for the people. 73 Extol, then, the limitless glory of thy Sustainer's mighty name! 74
