The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ Nay! I swear by this city 1 And you are free (from sin, to punish the enemies of Islam on the Day of the conquest) in this city (Makkah). 2 and [I call to witness] parent and offspring: 3 Assuredly We have created man in trouble. 4 Does he think that no one can overpower him? 5 (He boasts and shows off) saying, "I have spent a great deal of money (for the cause of God)". 6 Does he think that none has observed him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips? 9 And have shown him the two ways? 10 But he did not venture to scale the difficult steep. 11 and what shall teach thee what is the steep? 12 [It is] the freeing of one's neck [from the burden of sin,] 13 Or feeding on a day of severe hunger 14 Of a related orphan, 15 or to a destitute lying in dust; 16 And moreover to be of those who accepted faith, and who urged patience to one another and who urged graciousness to one another. 17 Such are they that have attained to righteousness; 18 and [as for] those who are bent on denying the truth of Our revelations, they are the people of the left hand, 19 with the Fire closed above them. 20
True are the words of Allah the Almighty.
