The tribe of Thamud rejected the Messengers. 141 Behold, their brother Salih said to them: "Will you not fear (Allah)? 142 Verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 143 So fear Allah and obey me. 144 And I ask of you no hire therefor; MY hire is but with the Lord of the worlds. 145 "Will you be left secure in that which you have here? 146 In gardens and fountains, 147 And tilled fields and heavy-sheathed palm-trees, 148 hewing out houses in the mountains and taking pride in your skill? 149 So fear God and obey me: 150 Do not obey the orders of the transgressors 151 Who corrupt the land and do not reform it." 152 They said: "Thou art only one of those bewitched! 153 "Thou art no more than a mortal like us: then bring us a Sign, if thou tellest the truth!" 154 He said, 'This is a she-camel; to her a draught and to you a draught, on a day appointed, 155 Do not treat her unkindly or the punishment of a grievous day will fall on you." 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and then they became regretful: 157 For they were seized by the torment. Verily there was a sign in this, but most of them did not believe. 158 Surely thy Lord, He is the All-mighty, the All-compassionate. 159
