Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Ha-Mim. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. 1 I swear by the Book that makes manifest (the truth). 2 We have indeed sent it down in a blessed night indeed it is We Who warn. 3 (We revealed it on the Night) wherein every matter is wisely determined 4 by Our command. Verily, We were set to send a Messenger 5 as a mercy (for the human being) from your Lord. Your Lord is All-hearing and All-knowing. 6 He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, 7 There is only One Lord. It is He who gives life and causes things to die. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. 8 (But the fact is, they lack certainty) and frolic about in doubt. 9 Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, 10 covering the people; this is a painful chastisement. 11 O our Sustainer, relieve us of suffering, for, verily, we [now] believe [in Thee]!" 12 But how will they take heed? Such are they that a Messenger came to them clearly expounding the Truth, 13 whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? 14 Verily We shall remove the torment for a while; but verily ye shall revert. 15 One day We shall seize you with a mighty onslaught: We will indeed (then) exact Retribution! 16 ۞ We had tried the people of Pharaoh before them. A respected prophet had come to them (saying): 17 Saying: Give up to me the slaves of Allah. Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you. 18 Do not think yourselves to be above God: I have come to you with clear authority. 19 And verily I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me. 20 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!' 21 Then he called upon his Lord: “These are a criminal people.” 22 We told him, "Leave the city with My servants during the night. You will be pursued. 23 and leave the sea becalmed [between thee and Pharaoh's men]: for, verily, they are a host destined to be drowned!" 24 How many were the gardens, springs, 25 And fields and grand palaces! 26 And goodly things wherein they rejoiced; 27 Thus (it was)! And We made other people inherit them (i.e. We made the Children of Israel to inherit the kingdom of Egypt). 28 Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they allowed any respite. 29
