The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall 1 To the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer. 2 from God, the Lord of the Stairways. 3 The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years. 4 (Muhammad), exercise patience with no complaints. 5 behold, men look upon that [reckoning] as something far away 6 Whereas We see it impending. 7 The day the sky becomes like molten brass, 8 And the mountains will be like flakes of wool, 9 And not a friend shall ask a friend, 10 Though they will be given sight of them. The guilty man will long to be able to ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children 11 his companion (wife), his brother, 12 his kinsmen who gave him refuge (from hardship) 13 and all the people of the earth, if that could deliver him. 14 No, in truth, it is a Furnace! 15 A fire that melts the hide. 16 and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back 17 And collected [wealth] and hoarded. 18 ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. 19 When evil toucheth him, he is bewailing. 20 and tight-fisted when good fortune visits him, 21 Not so those devoted to Prayer;- 22 and continue at their prayers, 23 And those in whose riches is a known right. 24 For the needy and those dispossessed, 25 and those who believe in the Day of Judgement 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord. 27 (from their Lord's chastisement none feels secure) 28 who guard their privates 29 Except in the case of their wives or those whom their right hands possess-- for these surely are not to be blamed, 30 But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors - 31 (Those) who keep their trusts and their covenant, 32 And those who stand by their testimony 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 Those shall be in Gardens, high-honoured. 35
