The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
CONSIDER the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 And the day resplendent 2 Consider the creation of the male and the female! 3 Lo! your effort is dispersed (toward divers ends). 4 As for him who gives (in charity) and keeps his duty to Allah and fears Him, 5 And believes in Al-Husna. 6 We will ease him toward ease. 7 And as for him who is niggardly and considers himself free from need (of Allah), 8 and cries lies to the reward most fair, 9 Unto him therefore We shall Indeed make easy the path to hardship. 10 When he falls (into Hell), his wealth will not help him. 11 Surely it is for Us to show the Right Way, 12 and to Us belong the hereafter and the worldly life. 13 I have now warned you of the Blazing Fire, 14 None shall enter it save the most wretched, 15 He who denieth and turneth away. 16 and from which the cautious shall be distanced. 17 Who giveth away his substance that he may be cleansed, 18 And have in his mind no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 but only out of a longing for the countenance of his Sustainer, the All-Highest: 20 He will surely be well-pleased (with him). 21
