The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
A beseecher besought the visitation of chastisement, 1 for the unbelievers, which none may avert, 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of ascent. 3 To whom the angels and the soul take a day to ascend, whose length is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore patiently endure, in the best manner (O dear Prophet Mohammed peace and blessings be upon him). 5 Lo! they behold it afar off 6 While we behold it nigh: 7 On the day when the heavens become like molten metal. 8 And the hills will be light as wool. 9 And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend, 10 Though they shall be made to see one another [(i.e. on the Day of Resurrection), there will be none but see his father, children and relatives, but he will neither speak to them nor will ask them for any help)], - the Mujrim, (criminal, sinner, disbeliever, etc.) would desire to ransom himself from the punishment of that Day by his children. 11 his companion (wife), his brother, 12 And his nearest kindred who shelter him 13 And all those who are on the earth, to save himself. 14 By no means! for it would be the Fire of Hell!- 15 will strip-off the flesh 16 It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, 17 And collected [wealth] and hoarded. 18 ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. 19 [As a rule,] whenever misfortune touches him, he is filled with self-pity; 20 And when good toucheth him he is begrudging. 21 Except those who closely follow (the Book of God), 22 Those who are constant at their prayer 23 And those in whose wealth there is a known right, 24 to those who ask [for help] and to the destitute; 25 And those who testify to the Day of Requital. 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's torment 27 surely the chastisement of their Lord is a thing none can feel secure from 28 and who are mindful of their chastity, 29 Are free of blame, 30 But those who seek more than this will be transgressors; 31 And those who keep their trusts and covenants; 32 And those who are upright in their testimonies, 33 and (finally) those who do not miss their ritual - prayers at the prescribed times; 34 Such shall dwell in the Gardens (i.e. Paradise) honoured. 35
