The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
I CALL TO witness the star of the pleiades when it has dipped 1 your comrade is not astray, neither errs, 2 Nor doth he speak of (his own) desire. 3 This is only revelation communicated, 4 He has been taught by the Extremely Powerful. 5 by the great mighty one (Gabriel), 6 While he was in the higher [part of the] horizon. 7 then he drew near, and became close 8 And was at a distance of but two bow-lengths or (even) nearer; 9 And He revealed unto His slave that which He revealed. 10 The heart lied not in that which he saw. 11 What! So do you dispute with him regarding what he saw? 12 And certainly he saw him in another descent, 13 By the Lote-tree beyond which none can pass, 14 Nigh unto which is the Garden of Abode. 15 When there covered the Lote Tree that which covered [it]. 16 his eye swerved not; nor swept astray. 17 and he certainly saw some of the greatest Signs of His Lord. 18 Have you ever thought about al-Lat and al-Uzza, 19 and about the third deity, al-Manat? 20 What! for you the male sex, and for Him, the female? 21 This is certainly an unjust apportioning. 22 They are but names which you have named, you and your fathers, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow but a guess and that which they themselves desire, whereas there has surely come to them the Guidance from their Lord! 23 Does man imagine that it is his due to have all that he might wish for, 24 But it is to Allah that the End and the Beginning (of all things) belong. 25
