A crowd of earlier generations 39 And a company of the later peoples. 40 As for the Companions of the Left 41 In hot wind and boiling water, 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor pleasant. 44 Indeed they were, before that, indulging in affluence, 45 And they used to persist in the great violation, 46 And they used to say: What! when we die and have become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients' 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 shall be gathered to the appointed time of a known day. 50 Then you, the erring and the deniers, 51 Will be eating from trees of zaqqum 52 and you shall fill therewith your bellies 53 and thereupon you shall drink boiling water, 54 Drinking even as the camel drinketh. 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 We created you. Will ye then admit the truth? 57 Have you considered the seed you spill? 58 Is it you that create it or are We the creators? 59 We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone 60 In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. 61 You have certainly known the first creation. Why, then, do you not take heed? 62 Just ponder over what you sow: 63 Is it you who cultivate it, or is it We Who develop it? 64 If We willed, surely We would make it chaff, so that ye would be left wondering. 65 (And say:) "We have fallen into debt; 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 Tell Me! The water that you drink. 68 Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder? 69 Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not give thanks? 70 Consider the fire that you strike (and get by friction). 71 Is it you that produce the trees for it, or are We the producers? 72 It is We who have made it as a reminder and a means of comfort for the people. 73 Then celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme! 74
