Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Ha-Mim. 1 I swear by the Book that makes manifest (the truth). 2 We sent it down during a Blessed Night: for We (ever) wish to warn (against Evil). 3 During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. 4 [Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger] 5 As mercy from your Lord. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing. 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain. 7 There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 Nay, they are in doubt, they sport. 9 Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, 10 engulfing the people; this will be a painful punishment. 11 "O Lord, take away this torment from us," (they will pray); "we have come to believe." 12 How shall they be reminded, and there came to them an Apostle making clear (the truth), 13 Yet they turned their backs on him and said: One taught (by others), a madman. 14 We are removing the punishment a little, but you revert. 15 On the Day We inflict the direst scourge upon all sinners, We will certainly exact retribution. 16 ۞ Already before them We tried the people of Pharaoh, and a noble Messenger came unto them, 17 "Give in unto me, O God's bondmen! Verily, I am an apostle [sent] unto you, worthy of trust! 18 Do not think yourselves to be above God: I have come to you with clear authority. 19 I have taken refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you should attack me with stones. 20 But if you do not believe what I say, leave me alone (and desist from laying hands on me).” 21 And he called to his Lord, saying, 'These are a sinful people.' 22 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed. 23 And leave thou the sea divided: verily they are a host to be drowned. 24 How many gardens and water-springs they left behind! 25 And cornfields and noble places! 26 and the life of ease in which they took delight! 27 As such (it was). And We made other people inherit them. 28 And the heavens and the earth wept not over them, nor were they respited. 29
