a multitude of the ancients, 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left? 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 And a shade of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor beneficial. 44 Verily, before that, they indulged in luxury, 45 And they used to persist in the great violation, 46 They used to say: “What! Once we are dead and are reduced to dust and bones, shall we still be raised to a new life from the dead? 47 "And also our forefathers?" 48 Say, "Indeed, the earlier ones and the later ones 49 shall all be brought together on an appointed Day. 50 Then you people who had gone astray and rejected the Truth 51 you shall eat of a tree called Zakkoum, 52 "Then you will fill your bellies therewith, 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 and you will drink as the lapping of thirsty camels. 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 We created you, then why do you believe not? 57 Then tell Me (about) the human semen that you emit. 58 Create him ye, or are We the Creator? 59 It is We Who have ordained death among you, and We have not been beaten - 60 that We will change you and cause you to grow again in a way you do not know. 61 And [since] you are indeed aware of the [miracle of your] coming into being in the first instance - why, then, do you not bethink yourselves [of Us]? 62 Tell Me! The seed that you sow in the ground. 63 Is it you who cultivate it, or is it We Who develop it? 64 If We will We can make it like dry trampled hay, so you would keep crying out. 65 Verily we are undone. 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to come down from the clouds - or are We the cause of its coming down? 69 If We will, We would make it bitter, why then do you not give thanks? 70 Have you thought about the fire you kindle? 71 Produce ye the tree thereof, or are We the Producer? 72 We made it a reminder and a provision for the needy. 73 So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
