The Thamud gave the lie to the Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: fear ye not? 142 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust. 143 so fear you God, and obey you me.' 144 "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds. 145 "Will ye be left secure, in (the enjoyment of) all that ye have here? 146 amidst gardens and springs 147 And fields of crops and palm trees with softened fruit? 148 You hew dwellings in mountains and exult in that. 149 Therefor keep your duty to Allah and obey me, 150 do not obey the bidding of those who are given to excesses, 151 those who spread corruption on earth instead of setting things to rights!" 152 They replied, "Surely you are bewitched. 153 You are but a human like ourselves. Produce for us a sign, if you are of the truthful' 154 He said: (Behold) this she-camel. She hath the right to drink (at the well), and ye have the right to drink, (each) on an appointed day. 155 Do not touch her with malice so that punishment of a dreadful day seizes you' 156 But they ham-strung her: then did they become full of regrets. 157 So the chastisement seized them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 158 And most surely your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
