Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha Mim! 1 By oath of this clear Book. 2 (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- 3 On this night, every absolute command coming from Us becomes distinguishable. 4 A command from Us; surely We are the senders (of apostles), 5 A mercy from your Lord; indeed He only is the All Hearing, the All Knowing. 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you would be sure. 7 There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 In fact, the unbelievers have doubts because of excessive involvement in worldly affairs. 9 Wait, then, for the Day when the sky brings forth plainly visible clouds of smoke. 10 which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. 11 (People will then say): “Our Lord, remove this scourge from us; we shall believe.” 12 How shall they be reminded, and there came to them an Apostle making clear (the truth), 13 Yet they turned away from him and said: one tutored, one distraced. 14 Verily, We shall remove the torment for a while. Verily! You will revert. 15 On the day when We shall seize them with the greater seizure, (then) in truth We shall punish. 16 ۞ And assuredly afore them We proved Fir'awn's people, and there came unto them an apostle honoured. 17 (and said): “Deliver to me Allah's servants. I am a trustworthy Messenger to you, 18 And saying, “And do not rebel against Allah; I have brought a clear proof to you.” 19 And verily I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me. 20 If you do not believe in me, at least keep away from me." 21 (But they were aggressive:) then he cried to his Lord: "These are indeed a people given to sin." 22 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed. 23 And leave the sea behind you as calm as ever. Surely they are an army that is doomed to be drowned.” 24 How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, 25 And corn-fields and noble buildings, 26 And goodly things wherein they rejoiced; 27 We gave these as an inheritance to other people. 28 The sky nor the earth cried for them, nor were they given respite. 29
