The tribe of Thamud also rejected the messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear Allah? 142 Truly, I am a trustworthy messenger for you, 143 “Therefore fear Allah and obey me.” 144 'I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being. 145 Will you be left secure in what is here; 146 In gardens and watersprings. 147 The fields of corn and date-palm trees with soft and tender spathes, 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 "Be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me, 150 And do not obey the order of the transgressors, 151 and spread mischief in the land rather than set things right." 152 They said, "You are only bewitched and insane. 153 you are no different from a mortal like us. So produce a sign if you are truthful." 154 He said: 'Here is a shecamel. She shall have her share of water as you have yours on an appointed day. 155 And touch her not with ill, lest there take hold of you the torment of a Mighty Day. 156 But they ham-strung her: then did they become full of regrets. 157 The punishment therefore seized them; indeed in this is a sign; and most of them were not believers. 158 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 159
