The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
There hath asked an asker for the torment about to befall. 1 which will inevitably seize the disbelievers. 2 a chastisement from Allah, the Lord of the ascending steps, 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit (Gabriel) ascend in a day, the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Wherefore be thou patient with a becoming patience. 5 Verily they think that the chastisement is far off, 6 While we behold it nigh: 7 The day when the sky will be like molten silver. 8 And the mountains will be like flakes of wool, 9 And no friend will ask concerning his friend. 10 though they shall be within sight of each other. The guilty one will gladly ransom himself from the torment of that Day by sacrificing his own children, 11 His wife and his brother, 12 And his kin that sheltered him. 13 And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. 14 By no means! For the raging flames of the fire 15 will strip-off the flesh 16 and it will claim all those who turned their backs [on the true faith] and turned away [from the truth], 17 And collected [wealth] and hoarded. 18 ۞ Lo! man was created anxious, 19 when evil visits him, impatient, 20 And when good touches him, withholding [of it], 21 except those who are steadfast 22 and are constant in their Prayer; 23 and in whose possessions there is a due share, acknowledged [by them,] 24 For him who begs and for him who is denied (good) 25 And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment; 26 and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord 27 Surely the chastisement of their Lord is (a thing) not to be felt secure of-- 28 And those who guard their chastity, 29 Are free of blame, 30 And whosoever seeketh beyond that, then it is those who are the trespassers 31 And those who keep their trusts and covenants; 32 And those who are upright in their testimonies, 33 And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;- 34 These will dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
