The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ I swear by this city -- 1 And you shall be made free from obligation in this city-- 2 And the begetter and whom he begot. 3 Verily We have created man into toil and hardship. 4 Does he think that never will anyone overcome him? 5 He says, "I have spent enormous wealth." 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Did We not make two eyes for him? 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 and guided him on the two highways? 10 But he has not attempted the ascent. 11 And what have you understood, what the valley is! 12 (It is:) freeing the bondman; 13 Or the giving of food in a day of privation 14 To the orphan with claims of relationship, 15 Or the poor in distress; 16 Then he is of those who believe and charge one another to show patience, and charge one another to show compassion. 17 These are the people of the right hand. 18 And those who disbelieve in Our signs, they are the Companions of the Left Hand; 19 with the Fire closed above them. 20
