We sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his Council, and he said: 'I am the Messenger of the Lord of the Worlds' 46 but when he came to them with Our signs, they ridiculed them, 47 And not a sign We showed them, but it was greater than its sister sign; and We seized them with chastisement, that haply they should return. 48 They said, "Sorcerer, call on your Lord for us, by virtue of His pledge to you: we shall certainly accept guidance," 49 When We relieved them from the torment they suddenly turned back on their heels. 50 And Pharaoh proclaimed among his people: “My people, do I not have dominion over Egypt, and are these streams not flowing beneath me? Can't you see? 51 Or am I [not] better than this one who is insignificant and hardly makes himself clear? 52 Why, then, have armlets of gold not been set upon him, or angels sent along with him? 53 Then he incited his people and they obeyed him; verily they were ever a transgressing people. 54 So when they vexed Us, We took vengeance on them, and We drowned them all. 55 and We made them a thing past, and We appointed them for an example to later folk. 56
