The tribe of Thamud also rejected the messengers. 141 Their brother Salih said to them: 'Will you not be cautious? 142 I am for you a faithful Messenger, 143 So keep your duty to Allah and obey me. 144 "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Will you be left secure in this here, 146 "Gardens and Springs, 147 and cornfields, and palm-trees laden with fruit -- 148 "And ye carve houses out of (rocky) mountains with great skill. 149 So fear you God, and obey you me; 150 "And follow not the bidding of those who are extravagant,- 151 Who work corruption in the land and rectify not. 152 They said: You are only of the deluded ones; 153 "You are but a human being like us. Then bring us a sign if you are of the truthful." 154 He said: "Here is a she-camel; it has a right to drink (water), and you have a right to drink (water) (each) on a day, known. 155 and do not touch her with malice so that there seize you the chastisement of a dreadful day.' 156 But they ham-strung her: then did they become full of regrets. 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 And verily! Your Lord, He is indeed the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful. 159
