Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Ha, Meem. 1 I swear by the illustrious Book. 2 Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind]. 3 On that night is made distinct every precise matter - 4 As commands from Us. It is indeed We who send (messengers), 5 A Mercy from your Lord, He is the Hearer, the Knower. 6 the Lord of the heavens and the earth and of all that is between them: if you would only have sure faith. 7 There is no worship except for Him – He gives life and causes death; your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. 8 Yet they play about in doubt. 9 So you await the day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. – 10 Which would envelope mankind. That would be a grievous affliction. 11 "O Lord, take away this torment from us," (they will pray); "we have come to believe." 12 How is it possible for them to accept guidance, whereas a Noble Messenger who speaks clearly has already come to them? 13 and they turned away, saying, "He is a trained and insane person". 14 If We remove the torment a little, you revert back (to misdeeds). 15 Upon the day when We shall assault most mightily, then We shall take Our vengeance. 16 ۞ Indeed before that We subjected the Pharaonites to the same test. A noble Messenger came to them 17 "Give in unto me, O God's bondmen! Verily, I am an apostle [sent] unto you, worthy of trust! 18 Do not think yourselves to be above God: I have come to you with clear authority. 19 And verily I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me. 20 But if you do not believe what I say, leave me alone (and desist from laying hands on me).” 21 Then he called upon his Lord: These are a guilty people. 22 (His Lord answered): 'Set out with My worshipers in the night, for you will surely be followed. 23 Leave the sea behind you parted; they are a host destined to be drowned." 24 How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, 25 And the cornlands and the goodly sites 26 and other bounties which they enjoyed yet left behind! 27 We gave these as an inheritance to other people. 28 And the heavens and the earth wept not over them, nor were they respited. 29
