(Firon) said to the chiefs around him: Most surely this is a skillful magician, 34 who wants to drive you out of your land by his sorcery. What, then, do you advise?" 35 They said: Give him and his brother respite and send heralds into the cities 36 "And bring up to thee all (our) sorcerers well-versed." 37 So the sorcerers were got together for the appointment of a day well-known, 38 And it was said unto the people: are ye going to assemble. 39 Haply we may follow the magicians, if they are the vanquishers. 40 And when the magicians came, they said to Firon: Shall we get a reward if we are the vanquishers? 41 Answered he: "Yea - and verily, in that case you shall be among those who are near unto me. 42 Moses said unto them: Throw what ye are going to throw! 43 So they cast down their ropes and staffs, and said, "By Pharaoh's honour, we shall surely win." 44 Then Moses threw his rod, when, behold, it straightway swallows up all the falsehoods which they fake! 45 Thereupon the magicians fell down in prostration, 46 saying, "We believe in the Lord of the Universe 47 the Lord of Moses and Aaron.' 48 Said (the Pharaoh): "You have come to believe in him before I gave you leave. He is surely your chief, who taught you magic. You will soon come to know: I will have your hands and feet cut off on alternate sides, and have every one of you crucified." 49 They said: "We do not care, for we are bound to return to our Lord, 50 Lo! we ardently hope that our Lord will forgive us our sins because we are the first of the believers. 51
