Mary (Maryam)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Kaf, Ha, Ya, 'Ayn, Sad. 1 (This is) a recital of the Mercy of thy Lord to His servant Zakariya. 2 When he called out his Lord (Allah) a call in secret, 3 and said, "My Lord, my bones have become feeble and my hair has turned white with age. Yet I have never been deprived in receiving from You the answer to my prayers. 4 "And Verily! I fear my relatives after me, since my wife is barren. So give me from Yourself an heir, 5 Who shall inherit of me and inherit (also) of the house of Jacob. And make him, my Lord, acceptable (unto Thee). 6 We answered his prayers with the glad news of the birth of a son by the name of John and told him, "We have never given such a name to anyone else." 7 'How shall I have a son, Lord' he asked, 'when my wife is barren, and I am advanced in years' 8 He said: So (it will be). Thy Lord saith: It is easy for Me, even as I created thee before, when thou wast naught. 9 (Zakariya) said: "O my Lord! give me a Sign." "Thy Sign," was the answer, "Shall be that thou shalt speak to no man for three nights, although thou art not dumb." 10 Thereupon Zechariah came out from the sanctuary and directed his people by gestures to extol His glory by day and by night. 11 (We said:) "O John, hold fast to the Book;" and We gave him wisdom right from boyhood, 12 as well as, by Our grace, [the gift of] compassion and purity; and he was [always] conscious of Us 13 and full of piety towards his parents; and never was he haughty or rebellious. 14 Peace on him the day he was born, and the day he dieth and the day he shall be raised alive! 15
