The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
I CALL TO witness the star of the pleiades when it has dipped 1 Your Companion is neither astray nor being misled. 2 Neither does he speak of his own will. 3 It [the Quran] is nothing but revelation sent down to him. 4 Which one of mighty powers hath taught him, 5 One strong of make. Then he stood straight. 6 When he was on the uppermost horizon. 7 Then the Spectacle became closer, and came down in full view. 8 Till he was (distant) two bows' length or even nearer, 9 and revealed to God's servant what he revealed. 10 The heart lied not in that which he saw. 11 what, will you dispute with him what he sees? 12 And assuredly he saw him at another descent. 13 to the Lot-tree (in the seven heavens) 14 Near it is the Garden of Refuge - 15 When that which shroudeth did enshroud the lote-tree, 16 The eye turned not aside nor yet was overbold. 17 He certainly saw the greatest (signs) of the existence of his Lord. 18 (Among the idols) have you considered allat and al'uzza, 19 And Manat, the third, the other? 20 Are there sons for you, and daughters for Him? 21 This indeed is an unjust division! 22 They are but names which you have named, you and your fathers, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow but a guess and that which they themselves desire, whereas there has surely come to them the Guidance from their Lord! 23 Does man imagine that it is his due to have all that he might wish for, 24 But to Allah belongs the last (Hereafter) and the first (the world). 25
