Thamood, belied their Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear Allah? 142 Surely I am a faithful apostle to you 143 so fear God and obey me. 144 For this I demand no recompense from you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. 145 “Will you be left peacefully in these favours over here?” 146 In gardens and fountains, 147 And tilled fields and heavy-sheathed palm-trees, 148 And hew ye out houses in the mountains skilfully! 149 "But fear Allah and obey me; 150 do not obey the bidding of those who are given to excesses, 151 Who make mischief in the land and do not act aright. 152 They said, "You are only bewitched and insane. 153 You are only a human being like ourselves. Show us a sign, if you are telling the truth." 154 He said, "Here is a she-camel. She shall have her turn of drinking, as you have yours, each on an appointed day, 155 Do not molest her lest the chastisement of an Awesome Day should seize you." 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and then they became regretful: 157 So the torment overtook them. Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 And verily! Your Lord, He is indeed the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful. 159
