The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O thou wrapped up (in the mantle)! 1 stand up, deliver your warning, 2 Proclaim the glory of your Lord; 3 and purify your robes, 4 shun uncleanness; 5 Give not, thinking to gain greater 6 And be patient for the sake of your Lord (i.e. perform your duty to Allah)! 7 So when the Trumpet will be blown. 8 that will surely be a hard day, 9 Far from easy for those without Faith. 10 LEAVE Me alone [to deal] with him whom I have created alone, 11 and appointed for him ample wealth 12 And gave him sons present before him. 13 and to whose life I gave so wide a scope: 14 Yet he desireth that I should give more. 15 By no means! surely he offers opposition to Our communications. 16 I will cover him with arduous torment. 17 For he thought and he plotted;- 18 Perish he! How maliciously he devised! 19 Again, death seize him, how he determined! 20 Then looked he, 21 And frowned and puckered his brow, 22 and in the end he turns his back [on Our message,] and glories in his arrogance, 23 and says, "All this is mere spellbinding eloquence handed down [from olden times]! 24 This is naught else than speech of mortal man. 25 Him shall I soon roast in Hell. 26 And what do you know what Hell is? 27 It spares nothing; it leaves nothing intact; 28 scorching the flesh; 29 Over it are nineteen (guards). 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
