The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ NAY! I call to witness this land 1 and you are dwelling in this city -- 2 and by parent and offspring, 3 We have indeed created man surrounded by hardships. 4 Does he think then that no one has power over him? 5 saying, 'I have consumed wealth abundant'? 6 Thinketh he that none beholdeth him? 7 Did We not grant him two eyes, 8 and a tongue, and a pair of lips, 9 And did We not show him the two highroads (of good and evil)? 10 But he did not venture to scale the difficult steep. 11 And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass? 12 It is freeing someone's neck from slavery; 13 Or the feeding on a day of hunger. 14 To an orphan, having relationship, 15 Or the poor in distress; 16 And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion. 17 Their place will be on the right hand. 18 But those who reject Our Signs, they are the (unhappy) Companions of the Left Hand. 19 Upon them shall be a Fire that will hem them in. 20
