The Hijjr Valley (Al-Hijjr)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ Alif. Lam. Ra. These are the verses of the Book and the glorious Quran. 1 The unbelievers would haply like to wish that they had submitted (and become Muslim). 2 Leave them to eat and enjoy, and let them be preoccupied with (false) hope. They will come to know! 3 Whenever We destroyed a town, a definite term had previously been decreed for it. 4 No people can outstrip the term for its destruction nor can it delay it. 5 And yet, they [who deny the truth] say: "O thou unto whom this reminder has [allegedly] been bestowed from on high: verily, thou art mad! 6 "Why bringest thou not angels to us if it be that thou hast the Truth?" 7 [Yet] We never send down angels otherwise than in accordance with the [demands of] truth; and [were the angels to appear now,] lo! they [who reject this divine writ] would have no further respite! 8 It is We who have sent down the Reminder and We will, most surely, safeguard it. 9 We sent Messengers to the ancient people who lived before you. 10 But no Messenger came to them except he was mocked. 11 This is how We make the mocking* enter the hearts of the guilty. (* The acts of disbelief.) 12 So, they will not believe in it: The example of former people is there. 13 Even if We opened out to them a gate from heaven, and they were to continue (all day) ascending therein, 14 They would surely say: "Our eyes have been (as if) dazzled. Nay, we are a people bewitched." 15
