He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ He frowned and turned (his) back, 1 Because the blind man came unto him. 2 But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified 3 Or that he might receive admonition, and that the admonition might profit him? 4 Yet you pay attention 5 So you are after him! 6 though you will not be questioned even if he never purifies himself. 7 But as for him who cometh unto thee with earnest purpose 8 and fearfully, 9 you pay no heed to him. 10 NAY, VERILY, these [messages] are but a reminder: 11 So whoever wishes may remember it. 12 It is contained in scrolls highly honoured, 13 exalted, purified, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 Honourable and Virtuous. 16 Woe to man! What hath made him reject Allah; 17 From what stuff hath He created him? 18 Of a drop of seed. He created him and formed him according to a measure. 19 and then makes it easy for him to go through life; 20 Then He caused him to die and be buried 21 Then when He pleases, He will raise him to life again. 22 By no means hath he fulfilled what Allah hath commanded him. 23 Let the human reflect on the food he eats, 24 how We pour down rain in abundance, 25 and split the earth, splitting, 26 how We made the grain to grow, 27 and vines, and reeds, 28 And olive and palm trees 29 And gardens, dense with many trees, 30 And fruit and grass - 31 For use and convenience to you and your cattle. 32 Then when cometh the Deafening Cry 33 on that Day each person will flee from his brother, 34 And his mother and his father 35 And from his wife and his children. 36 for on that day everyone will be completely engrossed in his own concerns. 37 Some faces on that Day shall be beaming with happiness, 38 laughing, joyous; 39 some faces on that day shall be dusty 40 Covered with the blackness (of shame): 41 These will be the unbelievers, the wicked. 42
