The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
O thou shrouded in thy mantle, 1 Arise, and warn, 2 And your Lord do magnify, 3 And thy garments keep free from stain! 4 and flee from the statues! 5 and bestow not favour in order to seek from others a greater return, 6 And persevere in the way of your Lord. 7 Finally, when the Trumpet is sounded, 8 That will be- that Day - a Day of Distress,- 9 Not easy upon the disbelievers. 10 Leave Me with him whom I alone have created, 11 And gave him vast wealth. 12 and children as [love's] witnesses, 13 And made several preparations for him. 14 and who still desires more. 15 Never will he receive more. He has been hostile to Our revelations. 16 and I shall constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 Behold, [when Our messages are conveyed to one who is bent on denying the truth,] he reflects and meditates [as to how to disprove them] 18 So may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated. 19 What an evil plan he has made! 20 May he be condemned again for his schemes! He looked around, 21 then frowned and scowled; 22 Then he turned away, and was haughty. 23 and said: “This (Qur'an) is merely a sorcery of yore; 24 This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 Anon shall I roast him into the Scorching Fire. 26 - Ah, what will convey unto thee what that burning is! - 27 It shall not spare, nor leave. 28 Darkening and changing the colour of man! 29 Above it are nineteen guards. 30 And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind. 31
