a large throng from the ancients, 39 and many from the later generations. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 In hot wind and boiling water, 42 and the shadow of a smoking blaze 43 Neither cool nor agreeable. 44 They had lived in luxury before this 45 And they have been persisting in the heinous offence. 46 And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again, 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients?' 48 Say: The first and the last, 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 Then you, you misguided ones, who deny the truth, 51 Most surely eat of a tree of Zaqqoom, 52 filling your bellies, with it 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 like a thirsty camel". 55 This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment. 56 We have created you, so why do you not believe? 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 Do you yourselves create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We have decreed death to you all, and We are not unable, 60 In the matter of exchanging you for others, and to transform you into what you do not know. 61 And ye certainly know already the first form of creation: why then do ye not celebrate His praises? 62 Ponder upon the soil you till, 63 Is it you who cause it to grow - or are We the cause of its growth? 64 If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim: 65 "Verily, we are ruined! 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 So what is your opinion regarding the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds or is it We Who brought it down? 69 If We will We can make it bitter, so why do you not give thanks? 70 And have you seen the fire that you ignite? 71 Have you raised its tree, or We have raised it? 72 We have made it a reminder and provision for the travelers, 73 Then celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme! 74
