The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
AN INQUIRER ASKED for the affliction that is to come 1 The Unbelievers, the which there is none to ward off,- 2 No one can defend him against God, the Lord of the exalted positions. 3 all the angels and all the inspiration [ever granted to man] ascend unto Him [daily,] in a day the length whereof is [like] fifty thousand years… 4 But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. 5 They deem it to be remote. 6 while We think that it is near at hand. 7 On the day when the heaven shall be as molten copper 8 and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, 9 And no friend will ask of a friend, 10 Though they shall be made to see one another. Fain would the guilty ransom himself from the torment of that Day by his children. 11 his wife, his brother, 12 and his kinsfolk who had stood by him, 13 And all who are on the earth; so that this might deliver him. 14 No! Indeed, it is the Flame [of Hell], 15 It snatches away by the scalps, 16 It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. 17 Who amasses and then hoards. 18 ۞ Indeed, man is born impatient: 19 Fretful when evil befalleth him 20 and whenever good fortune comes to him, he grows niggardly. 21 Not so are the prayerful. 22 Those who remain steadfast to their prayer; 23 And those in whose wealth there is a known right, 24 For the beggar and the destitute; 25 And those who accept the truth of the judgment day 26 who are afraid of the torment of their Lord, 27 for none is secure from the punishment of their Lord, 28 And those who guard their sex except from their wives and women slaves of old 29 Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they are not to be blamed - 30 whereas such as seek to go beyond that [limit] are truly transgressors; 31 And those who are faithful to their trusts and their covenant 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies. 33 And those who protect their prayers. 34 Those shall be in gardens, honored. 35
