The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
By the night when it enshrouds, 1 By the Day as it appears in glory; 2 And by oath of the One Who created the male and the female. 3 O men, you truly strive towards the most diverse ends! 4 Thus, as for him who gives [to others] and is conscious of God, 5 And (in all sincerity) testifies to the best,- 6 We shall surely ease him to the Path of Easing; 7 And for him who hoarded wealth and remained carefree, 8 and have no faith in receiving any reward (from God). 9 We shall facilitate for him the way to Hardship, 10 His wealth will not avail him when he falls into ruin. 11 BEHOLD, it is indeed for Us to grace [you] with guidance; 12 And lo! unto Us belong the latter portion and the former. 13 So, I warn you of the blazing Fire. 14 None shall enter it save the most wretched, 15 who belied and turned away, 16 But those most devoted to Allah shall be removed far from it,- 17 Who gives his wealth in order to be pure. 18 and confers no favor upon anyone for recompense 19 But only seeking the Countenance of his Lord the Most High. 20 And presently he shall become well pleased. 21
