The Thamud tribe denied the Noble Messengers. 141 Their brother Salih said to them: 'Will you not be cautious? 142 Surely I am a faithful apostle to you 143 So fear Allah and obey me. 144 "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Shall ye be left secure in that which is here before us. 146 in the midst of gardens and fountains, 147 sown fields and palmtrees, with slender spathes. 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 So fear Allah, and obey me. 150 and obey not the commandment of the prodigal 151 and spread mischief in the land rather than set things right." 152 They said, "You are only bewitched and insane. 153 Thou art nothing but a mortal like ourselves! Come, then, forward with a token [of thy mission] if thou art a man of truth!" 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. For her is a [time of] drink, and for you is a [time of] drink, [each] on a known day. 155 Do not touch her with malice so that punishment of a dreadful day seizes you' 156 They slew the she-camel, but later became regretful 157 And the punishment seized them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers. 158 Your Lord is the Mighty One, the Merciful. 159
