Thamud (people) belied the Messenger. 141 when their brother Salih said to them, 'Will you not be godfearing? 142 I am for you a faithful Messenger, 143 So fear Allah and obey me. 144 "And no reward whatever do I ask of you for it: my reward rests with none but the Sustainer of all the worlds. 145 Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] -- 146 amidst gardens and fountains, 147 "And corn-fields and date-palms with spathes near breaking (with the weight of fruit)? 148 "And ye carve houses out of (rocky) mountains with great skill. 149 So fear God and obey me: 150 and obey not the commandment of the prodigal 151 who spread evil in the land with no reform." 152 They replied: "You are nothing but one of those who are bewitched; 153 Thou art but a human being like unto us. So bring thou a sign if thou art of the truth-tellers. 154 He said: (Behold) this she-camel. She hath the right to drink (at the well), and ye have the right to drink, (each) on an appointed day. 155 Do not treat her unkindly or the punishment of a grievous day will fall on you." 156 But they hamstrung her; and on the morrow were repentant, 157 So the chastisement seized them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 158 And indeed your Lord – only He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
