In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
O thou wrapped up in thy raiment! 1 Rise to pray in the night except a little, 2 half the night, or a little less 3 Or add to it, and recite the Quran as it ought to be recited. 4 We shall soon entrust to you a message heavy (with solemnity). 5 Indeed, the first part of night is heavier in tread, and more upright in speech. 6 whereas by day a long chain of doings is thy portion. 7 And remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with (exclusive) devotion. 8 He is the Lord of the East and the West; there is no god but He. So take Him alone for your Guardian, 9 Bear patiently whatever they say, do not yield to them and keep on preaching decently to them. 10 And leave Me with [the matter of] the deniers, those of ease [in life], and allow them respite a little. 11 Surely with Us are heavy fetters and a flaming fire, 12 and a food that chokes, and a grievous chastisement. 13 On the day when the earth and the mountains shall quake and the mountains shall become (as) heaps of sand let loose. 14 We have sent a messenger who is a witness over you, just as We sent a messenger to Pharoah before you. 15 But Pharoah rebelled against the messenger, so We seized him with a strong, crushing grip. 16 How then, if you disbelieve, will you preserve yourselves on the day which will even turn the children hoary? 17 The heaven will split asunder with its grief; the promise of Allah will surely occur. 18 Verily this is a reminder. So let him who desires take the way to his Lord. 19
