The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
By the setting star, 1 This fellow-man of yours has not gone astray, nor is he deluded, 2 Nor doth he speak of (his own) desire. 3 It is only an Inspiration that is inspired. 4 He has been taught (this Quran) by one mighty in power [Jibrael (Gabriel)]. 5 Of might, he (Gabriel) stood firm 6 the strong one who appeared on the uppermost horizon. 7 Then he drew near, then he bowed 8 And was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer. 9 And He revealed to His servant what He revealed. 10 The heart [of the Prophet] did not misconstrue what he saw. 11 Will ye then dispute with him concerning what he saw? 12 He saw Him indeed another time 13 Near the lote-tree of the last boundary. 14 by the Garden of [Eternal] Repose, 15 with the lote-tree veiled in a veil of nameless splendour 16 [And withal,] the eye did not waver, nor yet did it stray: 17 Verily he saw one of the greater revelations of his Lord. 18 So have you considered al-Lat and al-'Uzza? 19 And subsequently the third, the Manat? 20 Is the male for you and for Him the female? 21 This is certainly an unjust apportioning. 22 They are naught but names which you have named, you and your fathers; Allah has not sent for them any authority. They follow naught but conjecture and the low desires which (their) souls incline to; and certainly the guidance has come to them from their Lord. 23 Or shall man have what he wishes? 24 Rather, to Allah belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. 25
