The chiefs of Pharaoh's people said, "This is most surely a skillful magician, 109 who seeks to drive you from your land!" Pharaoh said, "What then do you advise?" 110 They said, "Let him and his brother wait awhile, and send into the cities summoners, 111 That they may bring to thee every magician knowing. 112 So there came the sorcerers to Pharaoh: They said, "of course we shall have a (suitable) reward if we win!" 113 The Pharaoh replied, "In addition to your rewards, you will become my close friends thereafter." 114 They said: 'Moses, will you throw first or shall we be the throwers' 115 Said Moses: "Throw ye (first)." So when they threw, they bewitched the eyes of the people, and struck terror into them: for they showed a great (feat of) magic. 116 We said to Moses: "Throw down your staff;" and it swallowed up their conjurations in no time. 117 ۞ whereupon the truth was established, and vain was proved all that they had been doing. 118 they were defeated and turned belittled, 119 and the sorcerers prostrated themselves, 120 saying: 'We believe in the Lord of the Worlds, 121 the Lord of Moses and Aaron.' 122 Said Pharaoh: "Have you come to believe in him ere I have given you permission? Behold, this is indeed a plot which you have cunningly devised in this [my] city in order to drive out its people hence! But in time you shall come to know, [my revenge]: 123 "Surely, I will cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, then I will crucify you all." 124 They replied: 'We shall surely turn to our Lord. 125 "The only reason you have to hate us is that we believed in the signs of our Lord as they came to us. O our Lord, give us sufficient endurance that we may die submitting (to You)." 126
