Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the break of Day 1 By the ten nights (i.e. the first ten days of the month of Dhul-Hijjah). 2 by the odd and even (8th and 9th Dhil-hajj) 3 The night as it advances, 4 Why is there an oath in this, for the intelligent? 5 Seest thou not how thy Lord dealt with the 'Ad (people),- 6 Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars, 7 the like of which was never created in the land, 8 And [with] Thamud, who carved out the rocks in the valley? 9 and Pharaoh, he of the tent-pegs, 10 Who (all) were rebellious (to Allah) in these lands, 11 and exceeded in corruption therein. 12 Therefore your Lord struck them hard with the means of punishment. 13 Lo! thy Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for man - when his Lord proveth him and so honoureth him and is bounteous unto him, then he saith: 'my Lord hath honoured me, 15 But when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, "My Lord has humiliated me." 16 Not at all – but rather you do not honour the orphan. 17 And do not urge one another to feed the needy. 18 And you devour (others') inheritance greedily, 19 And ye love wealth with inordinate love! 20 Nay, but when the earth is ground to atoms, grinding, grinding, 21 and (when you find yourself) in the presence of your Lord and the rows and rows of angels, your greed for riches will certainly be of no avail to you. 22 And hell is made to appear on that day. On that day shall man be mindful, and what shall being mindful (then) avail him? 23 He will say: “Would that I had sent ahead what would be of avail for this life of mine!” 24 So on that Day, none will punish as He will punish. 25 And none will bind as He will bind. 26 [To the righteous it will be said], "O reassured soul, 27 "Come back thou to thy Lord,- well pleased (thyself), and well-pleasing unto Him! 28 enter, then, together with My [other true] servants 29 Enter My Paradise." 30
