The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the setting star, 1 Your comrade erreth not, nor is deceived; 2 nor does he speak out of desire. 3 It is not but a revelation revealed, 4 and taught to him 5 by the great mighty one (Gabriel), 6 being on the higher horizon. 7 Then he drew near, then he bowed 8 Till he was two bows length off or yet nearer. 9 And He revealed to His servant what He revealed. 10 His heart added no untruth to what he saw. 11 Will you then argue with him about what he saw? 12 And assuredly he saw him at another descent. 13 At the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary - 14 by the Garden of [Eternal] Repose, 15 When that which shroudeth did enshroud the lote-tree, 16 Neither did sight falter nor exceed the bounds. 17 He certainly saw the greatest (signs) of the existence of his Lord. 18 (Among the idols) have you considered allat and al'uzza, 19 and, another, the third manat? 20 Is it for you the males and for Him the females? 21 That indeed is a division most unfair! 22 These are nothing but names that you and your forefathers have invented, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They are merely following their conjectures and their carnal desires although guidance has come to them from their Lord. 23 Nay, shall man have (just) anything he hankers after? 24 And to God belongs the First and the Last. 25
