The Hijjr Valley (Al-Hijjr)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ Alif-Lam-Ra. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran, and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. These are the Verses of the Book, and a plain Quran. 1 The disbelievers will ardently wish that if only they had been Muslims! (At the time of death / in their graves / on the Day of Resurrection.) 2 so leave them to eat and enjoy themselves and let them be beguiled by vain hopes; for soon they will realise [the truth]. 3 And never did We destroy a township but there was a known decree for it. 4 No nation can outstrip its term nor can they lag behind. 5 And they say: O thou unto whom the Reminder is revealed, lo! thou art indeed a madman! 6 If you are a man of truth, why can't you bring the angels to us?" 7 We do not send down the angels except with truth; and the disbelievers would not then be reprieved. 8 We Ourselves have revealed the Quran and We are its Protectors. 9 And We had certainly sent [messengers] before you, [O Muhammad], among the sects of the former peoples. 10 and never yet came an apostle to them without their deriding him. 11 This is how We cause the hearts of the guilty ones to behave. 12 They believe not therein, and already the example of the ancients hath gone forth. 13 And even if We opened to them a gate from the heaven and they were to continue ascending thereto, 14 still they would say: 'Our eyes were dazzled; truly, we must have been a bewitched people' 15
