Mary (Maryam)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Kaf-Ha-Ya-'Ain-Sad. 1 Commemorate the beneficence of your Lord on Zachariah, His devotee, 2 Behold! he cried to his Lord in secret, 3 saying, 'O my Lord, behold the bones within me are feeble and my head is all aflame with hoariness. And in calling on Thee, my Lord, I have never been hitherto unprosperous. 4 now I fear my kinsmen when I am gone. [I have no hope of their continuing my mission] for my wife is barren, so grant me a successor from Yourself, 5 “He being my successor and the heir of the Descendants of Yaqub (Jacob); and my Lord, make him a cherished* one.” (* Make him a Prophet among the Descendants of Israel.) 6 [He was told], "O Zechariah, indeed We give you good tidings of a boy whose name will be John. We have not assigned to any before [this] name." 7 He said: My Lord! How can I have a son when my wife is barren and I have reached infirm old age? 8 [An angel] said, "Thus [it will be]; your Lord says, 'It is easy for Me, for I created you before, while you were nothing.' " 9 [Zachariah] prayed: "O my Sustainer! Appoint a sign for me!" Said [the angel]: "Thy sign shall be that for full three nights [and days] thou wilt not speak unto men". 10 Then Zachariah came forth from the shrine to his people and told them by signs to glorify the Lord morning and evening. 11 [And when the son was born and grew up, he was told,] "O John! Hold fast unto the divine writ with [all thy] strength!" - for We granted him wisdom while he was yet a little boy, 12 And tenderness from Our presence and purity, and he was God-fearing. 13 kind to his parents, not arrogant or a rebellious person. 14 He was born and died in peace and will be brought back to life again in peace. 15
