Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language – Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) 1 By the Book that makes things clear, 2 We have indeed sent it down in a blessed night – indeed it is We Who warn. 3 In it every wise matter is determined 4 by Our own command -- We have been sending messages, 5 A Mercy from your Lord, He is the Hearer, the Knower. 6 Lord of the heavens and earth, and all that between them is if you have faith. 7 There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. [He is] your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers. 8 Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. 9 So be on the watch for a day when heaven shall bring a manifest smoke 10 Which would envelope mankind. That would be a grievous affliction. 11 Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us – we now accept faith.” 12 How can they benefit from admonition, seeing that a messenger had already come to them explaining things clearly? 13 Yet they turned away from him and said: one tutored, one distraced. 14 Surely We will remove the punishment a little, (but) you will surely return (to evil). 15 The day that We shall seize them with a grievous hold, We will indeed castigate them. 16 ۞ We had tried the people of Pharaoh before them. A respected prophet had come to them (saying): 17 Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust, 18 And that do not exalt yourselves against Allah, surely I will bring to you a clear authority: 19 I seek protection from my Lord and your Lord from your decision of stoning me. 20 If you do not believe in me, at least keep away from me." 21 He therefore prayed to his Lord, “These are a guilty nation!” 22 (Allah said): "Depart you with My slaves by night. Surely, you will be pursued. 23 "And leave the sea as it is (quiet and divided). Verily, They are a host to be drowned." 24 How much they left behind of gardens and springs 25 sown fields, and how noble a station, 26 and [all that] life of ease in which they used to delight! 27 That is what We did; and We made another nation their heirs. 28 So the heaven and the earth did not weep for them, nor were they respited. 29
