Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
By the dawn, 1 And by ten nights, 2 And by oath of the even and the odd. 3 And the night when it departeth, 4 Is there in this an oath for one endowed with understanding? 5 Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with Ad 6 The people of many-columned lram. 7 The likes of whom had never been created in the land? 8 (Also consider how He dealt with) the Thamud, who carved their houses out of the rocks in the valley. 9 And with Pharaoh, firm of might, 10 Who all waxed exorbitant in the cities, 11 and spread much corruption in the land. 12 Thy Lord unloosed on them a scourge of chastisement; 13 For thy Lord is (as a Guardian) on a watch-tower. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him and then is gracious and provides good things for him, he says: "My Lord has been gracious to me." 15 But when He tries him (differently), then straitens to him his means of subsistence, he says: My Lord has disgraced me. 16 No! But you do not honor the orphan 17 And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor. 18 And ye devour heritages with devouring greed. 19 and you ardently love wealth. 20 But no; when the earth is ground to powder, 21 And comes your Lord, and angels row on row, 22 And Hell, that Day, is brought (face to face),- on that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance profit him? 23 He will say: would that I had sent before for this life of mine! 24 Wherefore on that Day none shall torment with His torment. 25 And none will bind as He will bind. 26 O the contented soul! 27 Return unto thy Lord, content in His good pleasure! 28 Enter thou among My righteous bondmen! 29 "And enter you My Paradise!" 30
