In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
READ in the name of thy Sustainer, who has created 1 created man out of a germ-cell 2 Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous, 3 Who taught by the pen, 4 Taught man that which he knew not. 5 Nay, but verily man is rebellious 6 As he considers himself independent! 7 Surely to your Lord is your return. 8 Hast thou seen him who dissuadeth 9 A bondman of Ours when he prayeth 10 Did you consider: what if he is on the Right Way, 11 and enjoins piety? 12 What is your opinion – if he denies and turns away, how wretched will be his state! 13 Does he not know that Allah does see? 14 Let him know that if he does not desist, We shall certainly drag him by his forelocks, 15 A lying, sinful forelock! 16 and then let him summon [to his aid] the counsels of his own [spurious] wisdom, 17 [the while] We shall summon the forces of heavenly chastisement! 18 No, not at all. Never obey him. But prostrate yourself and become nigh (to your Lord). ۩ 19
