[AND the tribe of] Ad gave the lie to [one of God's] message-bearers 123 Recall, when their brother Hud said to them: "Have you no fear? 124 Behold, I am an apostle [sent by Him] to you, [and therefore] worthy of your trust: 125 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 126 And I ask of you no hire therefor: my hire is but with the Lord of the worlds. 127 You construct monuments on every hill in vain, 128 and raise strong mansions as if you were to live forever? 129 When you assault, you assault like tyrants! 130 “Therefore fear Allah, and obey me.” 131 Fear Him who has given you all the things you know. 132 "He has aided you with cattle and children. 133 "And Gardens and Springs. 134 Lo! I fear for you the retribution of an awful day. 135 They said, "Whether you preach to us or not, 136 this is nothing but a habit of the ancients: 137 and we shall not be chastised.' 138 And so they gave him the lie: and thereupon We destroyed them. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 139 Surely your Lord is the Mighty One, the Merciful. 140
